Greg Johansen says he was trying to help the suspect find a cab early Sunday morning when he was asked about his sexual orientation.

He claims he was assaulted only moments after telling the man he is gay. Calgary police are currently treating this as an assault case, and have not yet labelled it as a hate crime.

"Of course I am going to suggest this was a hate crime because, you know, the attack was unprovoked and the last thing I said to him was that I was gay," said Johansen.

"I am just going to let the police do their investigation. I trust them and however it pans out it pans out."

Johansen says while he was upset, he wants his attacker to get help.
