Alleged shoplifter takes security guard on police chase
Zellers security guard jumped into offender’s stolen car before he drove away
A 32-year-old Calgary man has been charged with robbery and kidnapping after police were led on a wild chase in the northeast late Sunday afternoon.
It started with an attempted shoplifting at the Zellers store in Sunridge Mall around 5 p.m. MT, say police.
A female security guard jumped into the offender’s vehicle to try to stop the man from getting away.
But the alleged shoplifter drove away with the guard in the vehicle, smashing into a car in the parking lot. The car that was hit happened to have an eight-year-old child in it, but the child was not hurt.
Duty Insp. Paul Stacy said the offender then headed out onto 36th Street N.E..
"[They] started driving on the wrong side of the road, coming head-on into traffic on 36th Street, so we wound up picking up the vehicle a short time later on 36th Street driving very erratically," he said.
"[They] still had the Zellers staff member in there and at 26th Avenue and 36th Street smashed into more vehicles as he was trying to flee."
Stacey said police units managed to box in the fleeing vehicle, which turned out to be stolen from an area near 16th Avenue and Barlow Trial.
The suspect was taken into custody and the Zellers security guard was unharmed, but shaken up by the wild ride.
The man has also been charged with assault with a weapon, assault causing bodily harm, posession of stolen property, failing to stop for police, four hit and runs, driving an uninsured vehicle, operating an unregistered vehicle and operating a vehicle without a licence.
