The Calgary Dragon Boat Festival is underway at North Glenmore Park and will run until Sunday.

There are 50 teams from across Alberta competing in this year's event, which sees competitors racing to paddle a long boat decorated with  Chinese dragon heads and tails.

"It's not professional at all, although we've got some teams that are very dedicated to the sport and train quite a bit," said organizer Joe Connelly.

Participants are raising money for charities and several politicians will also enter the race to help raise money.

The event also features multicultural performances, live music, a beer garden and a kids' area.

Organizers are advising spectators to park at Mount Royal University and use the shuttle buses organized by Calgary Transit.
