13 heritage homes could be demolished in Kensington rezoning
Local developer wants to build 70-unit brownstone-style condo
A proposal to tear down more than a dozen century homes along Memorial Drive has heritage advocates frustrated.
One local developer wants to build a 70-unit brownstone-style condo complex just east of 10th Street N.W. The plan would involve demolishing 13 houses that are around 100 years old.
"I really think they help create the neighbourhood around Hillhurst, Sunnyside," said Cynthia Klaasen with the Calgary Heritage Initiative Society. "They define what this area is all about ... We are rapidly losing that in Calgary."
The developer has just applied to have the area rezoned to allow for higher density.
It would be years before any new development breaks ground.
