New West baseball crying foul over proposal to give Queen's Park stadium to Whitecaps

New Westminster baseball supporters are hoping a late-inning rally will save their ballpark from being turned into a soccer stadium.

Last night more than 100 supporters marched to New Westminster City Hall, and crammed into the council meeting, hoping to convince councillors not to move them out of Queen's Park stadium.

The council was debating a plan from the Vancouver Whitecaps Football Club to have the stadium retrofitted to host the club's minor soccer team.

That means the local baseball teams would have to be moved somewhere else, a proposal that has been met with with mixed reviews from residents.

Baseball player Talon van Horn said they believe they can stop the move.

"I don't think this is a done deal," said van Horn. "First year playing in New West, love the stadium, can't imagine not coming here next year."
