Vancouver abortion protesters convicted

Two prominent Vancouver anti-abortion activists have been found guilty of violating B.C.'s bubble zone law.

Two prominent Vancouver anti-abortion activists have been found guilty of violating  B.C.'s bubble zone law.

Donald David Spratt and Cecilia von Dehn were arrested in June 2009 for distributing copies of the bubble zone law in front of Everywoman's Health Centre on Commercial Drive while wearing sandwich board signs.

The signs warned people they could face arrest for simply standing too close to the clinic.

Spratt has been fined $1,000 and was put on two years probation. Dehn also received two years probation.

Their lawyer, Doug Christie, said the law is unconstitutionally restrictive and the pair would appeal.

The Supreme Court of Canada has already refused to hear Spratt's appeal of an earlier conviction under the same law.

The B.C. Court of Appeal also refused to hear a similar challenge of the law by Spratt and another man in 2002 after their convictions of violating the statute in 2000.
