BC Hydro says power has been restored to more than 55,000 homes in the Lower Mainland Wednesday afternoon — most of them in the Fraser Valley.

An estimated 40,000 customers were left in the dark in Abbotsford and Chilliwack, and others affected were in Delta, Langley and Surrey.

BC Hydro's website says a "transmission circuit failure" was responsible for the massive power outage.

It says the power outage started shortly after 1:30 p.m. PT.
