Sidney RCMP confirm police raided the marijuana shop, Dispensary by the Sea, Thursday and arrested one man.

The lawyer representing the store said Friday he is baffled as to why police are still the first to respond when it comes to dealing with medical marijuana shops.

"I had hoped and was somewhat optimistic that we were past the point where the police were the first line of response to the operation of medical cannabis dispensaries," said Kirk Tousaw.

He said the store serves about 2,000 customers in the community.

At the moment it is not legal to sell marijuana in this country, though the federal government promises to introduce legislation in the spring of 2017.

RCMP will not confirm if the man who was arrested has been charged.
