Sailor, 70, oldest woman to sail non-stop around globe solo
Jeanne Socrates arrives in Victoria, B.C., harbour Monday morning
A 70-year-old British woman has become the oldest woman to sail solo around the world after arriving at Victoria's Inner Harbour early this morning.
This was the third attempt for Jeanne Socrates, a retired math teacher, since 2009. Engine trouble ended the first attempt, and the second ended in 2010 during a storm off Cape Horn.
Socrates set out from Victoria, B.C., in her 11-metre cruiser Nereida last October and had hoped to sail back into the harbour on Friday.
Light winds off Vancouver Island stalled her homecoming until this morning.
