Vancouver police say they have arrested a 38-year-old woman following an attack that injured three people in a busy parking lot.

Around noon on Sunday, police say a 47-year-old woman and her husband were walking in the Safeway parking lot near East Broadway and Commercial Drive when the woman was suddenly stabbed.

Her husband, along with a customer and two Safeway staff members held the suspect until police arrived.

The stabbing victim was rushed to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, while two of the men who provided assistance suffered relatively minor injuries.

"We are very thankful for the brave actions of those who intervened to stop this woman from escaping," said VPD Const. Jason Doucette.

Investigators do not believe the victims were known to the suspect.

Police say the woman is being assessed in hospital.

They say the investigation into the stabbing is ongoing.
