As many as 12 Saanich homes have been evacuated because of a large sinkhole created by a water main break at Burnside Road W. and Wilkinson Road early Saturday morning.

Saanich police sent out this early morning tweet showing the roadway flooded with water.

Work crews are cleaning up and trying to contain the damage. They say they hope to have water back on, and the road patched up by the end of the day.

The Saanich Police Department says the flow of water from the broken water main has now been stopped.

Water pouring onto Highway 1 caused it to be closed for part of the morning.

Saanich police say the standing water may have also caused a rollover accident early Saturday.
