One man is dead after a fire broke out in a suite on the fourth floor of the Quality Inn building in downtown Vancouver on Thursday night.

Vancouver Fire and Rescue officials say the 45-year-old man died in his room in what they are assuming was a mattress fire.

The flames were contained to the one suite.

A body under a tarp could be seen near the entrance to the building.

Residents were forced out of the building.

They say the fire alarm inside goes off with annoying regularity.

"It seems like an ongoing event with our fire alarm going off so people don't really pay much attention to it," said resident Brock Fetterly.

"It wasn't until someone knocked on my door and said that there's a fire I took heed and got out of the building."
