Police have confirmed a 25-year-old Caucasian male found in a burned out car in Burnaby, B.C., last week was killed in a targeted hit, but have not released his identity or the cause of death.

Rescue officials found the man's body in the driver's seat of the car after the fire was extinguished during the early morning hours of July 16. The car was located on the 5600 block of Clinton Street, outside an elementary school.

The badly burned body was identified using tips from the public and dental records, but at the request of the victim's family the man's name was not released, homicide investigators said.

Some neighbours told CBC News they heard gunshots just before car exploded into flames, but those reports have not been confirmed by police.
