Ontario hiker dies in fall at B.C.'s Capilano bridge

Police in North Vancouver are investigating after a 30-year-old Ontario man fell to his death near the Capilano Suspension Bridge on Saturday evening.

Police say the victim was walking through the trails at the popular tourist attraction at about 6 p.m. PT Saturday when he fell 60 metres to the riverbed below.

"This tragic incident will be investigated by the RCMP to determine the actions of the hiker prior to the fall," said RCMP Cpl. Richard de Jong.

"There does not appear to be any criminal intent or activity related to this tragic incident."

One witness told CBC News the man was trying to retrieve a debit card he had dropped over a railing near an area known as the Cliff Walk when he slipped and fell.

Police said the St. Catharines, Ont., man was on vacation in the area at the time of the accident. The man's identity is being withheld at the request of his family.

Capilano Suspension Bridge officials have extended condolences to the man's family and friends.

In June 2010, a California high school student fell to his death after climbing over the guard rail at the attraction. Investigators later concluded he had taken LSD and ignored repeated warnings to stop climbing over the guard rails.
