This weekend Czech speed climber Libor Hroza set a new world record at the Sport Climbing Association Provincial Championships in Saanich, B.C.

Hroza, who's spent the past 18 months training on Vancouver Island, recorded a time of 5.578 seconds, two hundredths of a second faster than Ukraine's Danyl Boldyrev.

However, Hroza's climb is not considered an official world record because official times can only be set at International Federation of Sport Climbing events,

"I want to set it again. I want to break it," said Hroza, who previously held the world record until Boldrev recorded a faster time last season.

Hroza is looking forward to improving his time and competing against the world's best speed climbers, including Boldyrev, at next month's IFSC at the Boulders Climbing Gym in Saanich.

The May 17 event at the Boulders Climbing Gym in Saanich will be the first IFSC competition held outside of Europe or Asia.
