Kaslo motorcyclist says noise petition, district action, misguided
“I’m sad it’s dividing our small community in two instead of working together," says rider and shop owner
After some Kaslo residents started a petition to ask the RCMP to crack down on motorcycle noise, another group of residents are taking the riders' side and want their town named the most rider friendly community in Canada.
Led by Karissa Stroshein, the group feels motorcyclists are a net positive for the community.
Stroshein is a motorcyclist and owner of Barren's Sport Shop, which caters to riders.
"We've got one of the top 10 roads in Canada [for motorcycles] so we do get quite a few through, and they bring a lot of economic [benefits] to the whole area," she told Radio West host Rebecca Zandbergen. "They stop in, they shop, they tour the community … and really support our communities."

Stroshein says the petition to get the RCMP to crack down on noisy bikes doesn't reflect the whole community, and thinks most people want the motorcyclists to come.
"I'm sad it's dividing our small community in two instead of working together in this time of economic crisis where we need all the tourists we can get," she said.
She says sometimes people get "overzealous" with their throttles, which causes a lot of noise, but she says most riders are respectful.
She says the petition, and the Regional District of Central Kootenay's request for better enforcement of noise laws, are both misguided.
"We have a tough time policing our area as it is, just in general with all the other issues," she said. "To put more of a workload on our officers can be unfair because it could take away from more important issues."
Stroshein says between boats, lawn mowers, cars and other machines, there are plenty of other sources of noise around Kaslo than what comes from motorcycles.
