Pictures of a gang rape at a weekend party east of Vancouver have been circulated on the internet via Facebook, police say.

One young male was arrested in connection with what was earlier described as a sexual assault at a rave in Pitt Meadows, B.C., late Friday and early Saturday morning, RCMP Supt. Dave Walsh said in a release Tuesday.

An updated release from Walsh on Wednesday said police believed more than one person sexually assaulted a teenage girl and that video and still photos were taken of the incident and were being distributed on the social networking website, Facebook.

Officers said they would release more details at a news conference scheduled for Thursday morning and said they believed there had been obstruction of their initial investigation of the incident.

Police didn't release an address for where the party took place, but they said it had occurred on private property "and was attended by a large number of youth" in the community, 20 kilometres east of Vancouver.

Police were alerted to the sex assault Sunday.
