Fraser Cedar Products mill workers facing layoffs after 2nd major fire

A fire at the Fraser Cedar Products mill in Maple Ridge Saturday night destroyed about 50 per cent of the main building and will likely result in the layoff of 60 to 65 workers according to the mill's owner.

A fire at the Fraser Cedar Products mill in Maple Ridge Saturday night destroyed about 50 per cent of the main building and will likely result in the layoff of 60 to 65 workers according to the mill's owner.

Maple Ridge firefighters had to call in water tankers and request assistance from firefighters in Mission before the blaze could be brought under control. 

On Sunday morning, firefighters were still on scene hosing down hot spots.

it's the second time in a year, there has been a weekend fire at the mill at 27400 Lougheed Highway.

In Dec 2013, a fire sparked by a welder's torch ignited a major blaze that also required water tankers and the assistance of the Mission fire department before it was extinguished.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
