Listen to CBC Radio One's On The Coast Sept 24 - 28 for a special series on mindfulness. Each day, On The Coast will look at stories of people working to bring meditation and mindfulness into real life circumstances - at school or at work. The word "mindfulness" has gained popularity through lifestyle publications and social influencers, but there can be real applications for the practice. The series will hear from people teaching mindfulness to children, using meditation to work through trauma, and using both to be better at business.

September 24: The Science of Mindfulness

  • On The Coast will look at the neuroscience of mindfulness and meditation, and share personal stories of people who used mindfulness to work through trauma, disease, and hospitalization.

September 25: Back to School Brain

  • What are the benefits of mediation and mindfulness for young children? On The Coast will speak with a scientist on how the practice can be applied in schools.

September 26: The Business of Mindfulness

  • Business consultants have embraced meditation and mindfulness as a technique to success. On The Coast hears from a person bringing meditation to Vancouver's finance sector, and speak to a local carpenter who used meditation to overcome trauma and start a business

September 27: Controversy and Skepticism

  • Mindfulness and meditation have their skeptics, and On The Coast speaks with one. They challenge the idea that this is a universally useful practice.

September 28: The Future of Mindfulness

  • On The Coast brings together people from the previous four stories for a panel discussion on the future of mindfulness and how (or if) it can apply to an average person.

Listen to On The Coast with Gloria Macarenko weekdays from 3 - 6 p.m. PT on CBC Radio One.
