Brit fastest in men's 200m qualifying
Christian Malcolm has stepped into the breach left by Maurice Greene and Ato Boldon. The British sprinter had the fastest time in the Tuesday's qualifying heats for the 200 metres.
Malcolm, who recorded a personal best time of 20.13, and American Shawn Crawford were the only runners to go under the 20:20 mark.
Olympic champion Konstadinos Kederis of Greece, clocked a time of 20.30 en route to winning his heat.
Claudinei Quirino Da Silva of Brazil and Christopher Williams of Jamaica were among the 13 other qualifiers.
Surprizingly, American Clay Ramon, who came to Edmonton with a world leading time of 20.05, and up-and-comer Dwain Chambers of Britain failed to go through to Wednesday's semifinals.
Earlier this week, prohibitive favourites Greene, the defending world champion, and Boldon, the Olympic silver medallist, withdrew because of injuries.
