Scotiabank loses data CDs with SIN numbers
Account numbers also on lost 3 CD-ROMs
Scotiabank has reportedly lost three data CDs containing personal information like social insurance numbers and account numbers for an undisclosed number of customers.
The Toronto Star reports that Scotiabank lost the three CDs in its internal mail sometime last Wednesday.
The bank told the newspaper that the loss is a rare incident and only a "small percentage" of customers are affected.
It said it is warning clients as a precaution so they can monitor accounts for any fraudulent activity.
The bank quotes one customer as saying he was concerned that someone might steal his identity and apply for fraudulent credit cards.
The discs were set to be transferred to the Canada Revenue Agency as part of the bank's requirements to report the information.
