The term vitamin was derived from "vitamine" — a compound word coined in 1912 by the Polish biochemist Kazimierz Funk. The name is from vital and amine, meaning amine of life. We cannot make vitamins and must obtain them through diet, or in the case of Vitamin D, the environment. So far, 13 have been classified.
