New research in Little Smoky: Future simulations with virtual caribou
Studying Virtual Caribou
Christina Semeniuk's research project uses computer simulated caribou avatars (or agents as the scientists prefer to call them). It’s a tool called computational intelligence that finds its origins in artificial life and it’s almost like a computer game. She has coded little caribou avatars and given them a whole set of roles and rules to live by. All of them are based on the scientific information that has been collected over many decades about how boreal caribou behave in the wild.
Learning from Caribou Simulations
Christina Semeniuk is using her computer simulations to run a wide variety of scenarios for future oil and gas, and forestry development in Little Smoky. The results show how different development will impact the caribou living in the range, and the researchers are able to provide management recommendations.
