CBC Music's annual talent search returns with revved-up prizes for aspiring musical artists

Toyota Searchlight is CBC Music's long-running hunt for Canada's undiscovered musical talent. Could that undiscovered talent be you? Or a Canadian musician you know?

Starting on Wednesday, April 20 at 2:59 p.m. ET, all you have to do is upload an audio file or video to YouTube — what you consider to be your very best original song in any genre

Everything you need to know about Toyota Searchlight 2022 can be found here.

You'll be able to sign up with our new easy-to-use Toyota Searchlight entry form. Get a head start by uploading your best song (audio or video) to YouTube now, before the competition officially opens.

Meet Jhyve, our grand prize winner of Toyota Searchlight 2021.

Please note that you will be judged on the following:

  • Your potential for success in the Canadian music industry.
  • Your vocal performance, quality of music and lyric composition.
  • Our judges' impression of your song and your career to date.
  • Your social media engagement and streaming numbers.

Please also note that the quality of your song will be judged on audio, not video.

Meet the former Toyota Searchlight winners who are nominated for Juno Awards in 2022.

There are a few other exciting changes to Toyota Searchlight 2022 that we want to give you a heads up on:

  • Public voting will only occur in the opening round.
  • Three artists will make it into the next round, which will be the Top 100, based on the popular vote. The other 97 artists will be chosen by our judges.
  • After being voted into the Top 100, the three top-voted artists will each receive Fan Choice Awards (see below for more details).
  • The Top 10 artists and winners will also be chosen by our judges.

And with expanded prizes, Toyota has pulled into our V.I.P. parking as our title sponsor to once again support the search.

Toyota Searchlight2022 Frequently Asked Questions.

Do you have a question about entering Toyota Searchlight? Find the answers here.

Find all the answers to the most commonly asked questions about Toyota Searchlight below.

Are there any changes to this year’s Toyota Searchlight?

Yes. There is only one voting round this year that we’re calling our Fan Choice Award. The top three vote-getters in this round of voting will win Prizes listed in our Prize section at cbc.ca/music/searchlight, and also advance to the Top 100 list. Additionally, we have expanded to allow you to vote for 5 different artists each day, from the usual single vote per artist, per day.

Why is there only one round of voting?

Past Searchlight entrants have told us that it is challenging to mobilize fans through two rounds of voting. So we’ve condensed voting to one round and added prizes. Only the top three vote-getters will advance to the Top 100 round. The other 97 spots in the Top 100 will be determined by industry judges, in an effort to advance songs by quality not by voting.

How do I enter Toyota Searchlight?

Registration for Toyota Searchlight opens on Wednesday, April 20, 2022. In order to enter, you need to upload your song to your own YouTube page as part of the submission process. Once it is uploaded, you can fill out a submission form.

Do you only accept Youtube videos?

Yes. We only accept an individual YouTube video set to ‘Public’ with no other restrictions. We do not accept any other formats (Spotify, Soundcloud, bandcamp, mp3’s etc.). Our player ONLY works with a YouTube video. Entries that do not have a public YouTube video of your song will not be eligible and disqualified from the contest.

My video is on YouTube, but not on my account. Can I still enter?

To enter, you must be the owner of the YouTube account where the song exists, or the song must be uploaded on behalf of your record label. If your song is deleted on YouTube after you have entered, this will void your entry. It is important to perform the upload yourself and ensure that your video cannot be tampered with, or be in an agreement with a label who is managing your songs for you.

I don't have a video, can I upload a song?

Your video entry does not have to be a music video, and can be as simple as your song and a static image.

There are a number of tools available to help you create your entry. All that you'll need is an image of your band, an MP3 file and your YouTube account.

Please go to audioship to upload your song.

There are step-by-step instructions that will guide you through logging into your Google account, selecting your YouTube account, uploading your MP3 file and uploading your band image.

Once this has been completed, you can fill out the entry form, on this site once submissions open April 20th at 2:59PM ET, located at: https://www.cbc.ca/searchlight

Do I lose rights to my song?

No, the song will always be yours. By entering, you agree to our rules and regulations, though, which allows the CBC to use your song for broadcast and editorial purposes during the contest period.

Help! I found a problem with my entry, can I change it?

If you have discovered a problem with your entry, please email us immediately at searchlight@cbc.ca using your Artist/Band name as the email subject, for example “THE SEARCHLIGHT BAND”. Please make sure to include a detailed account of the problem with your entry, and how it should be fixed in the body of your email. A CBC Producer will contact you within a few days.

Why should I ask people to vote for my song?

There are two ways to move ahead in the Toyota Searchlight competition.

Your song could advance to the Top 100 and beyond by being chosen by our industry judges.

However, the top 3 artists who get the most votes will move on to the Top 100 and potentially further in the contest and win prizes.

Use your socials and share your Toyota Searchlight Artist page which features the “vote now” button. Don’t forget to use the hashtag #Searchlight2022

How can I vote?

To vote you will need to go to our voting site where all the entries are listed under “Artist Entries.” Each video will have a button to vote, along with options to share the page on social media. Our hashtag this year is #Searchlight2022. You can also tag us @cbcmusic to let us know who you’re voting for.

How do I send my voting link to my fans?

Every Artist page has a direct link option. Click on the 'Tweet' button on your video page and that will generate a link which you can copy and paste to use in other applications. Or, simply copy and paste the URL at the top of your Artist page and share it with your fans.

Who decides if my song goes through?

In the opening rounds, your song will continue onward with a combination of audience votes and input from Music Industry Judges. In the national top 10 round, our Music Industry Experts will decide the ultimate winner.

Can we submit more than one song?

No, we’re sure you have tons of great tunes, but we ask that you only submit your very best original song for Toyota Searchlight 2022.

Are there any key dates I need to keep in mind?
