'I like a challenge': Haviah Mighty covers Tegan and Sara's 'Closer'
The Polaris Prize-winning rapper does a bold new take on the pop hit for her Junos 365 session
As part of our coverage of the 2020 Juno Awards, we're inviting some of today's hottest Canadian acts to cover a past winner in the single of the year category.
Tegan and Sara's "Closer" won that award at the 2014 Junos, and rapper Haviah Mighty picked it for her Junos 365 session.
"When I saw it on the list of songs that I could choose [from], I was just intrigued by the concept of doing something that's so different from my sound, but also something that I really enjoyed when it did come out," she reflected.
"I like a challenge so it was a lot of fun," continued Mighty. While her Polaris Prize-winning style of rap is pretty far removed from Tegan and Sara's buoyant synth-pop, there are similarities, too.
"It's really rhythmic, and as a rapper, I was intrigued by the way the chorus is written," she explained, adding, "It had elements that I thought could retain the rap style that is me, but also I'd have to recreate so much to kind of bring the rest of it in."
