Surprise! Lights completely shocks a music class performing her song
Each year, CBC Music in association with MusiCounts — the charity of the Juno Awards — launches a contest to engage music classes across the country with Canadian music. It's called the Canadian Music Class Challenge.
It's quickly becoming a tradition during the CBC Music Class Challenge to surprise one lucky class with a visit from a Canadian musician. Last year we did it with Ruth B, when she returned to her old high school.
This year, we invited the Mayfield Magnetics from Mayfield Secondary in Caledon, Ont., to visit CBC Toronto to supposedly record their version of "Giants" by Lights for a Canadian Music Class Challenge promo video.
What the Mayfield Magnetics didn't know was that Lights herself was actually waiting just outside in the hallway. When she entered the room, she shocked the Mayfield Magnetics mid-song. Lights met the class, and joined the thrilled students in their performance. Check out the heartwarming results above.
(Note: the above video will not be the Mayfield Magnetics' official submission to the contest this year).
The Mayfield Magnetics won the Canadian Music Class Challenge in 2016 in the category of senior high school vocal, and placed in the top 10 in the same category last year. They are led by music teacher Jennifer Moon. To great success, Moon puts an emphasis on harmonies, arrangements, and having fun.
