What's On: Nuit Blanche and other parties in the city this weekend

Without a doubt, Nuit Blanche is the biggest party in town this weekend. But it's not the only party in town. Here are some worth checking out:

Nuit Blanche
Oct 4
Various Locations

Goodnight Storytime/Diaspora Dialogues

An interactive literary installation where audiences can take some time from their busy lives to relive the calm moments of childhood, take a brief nap, and listen to some of Toronto's best and brightest authors read their stories. We tell stories to understand ourselves and our lives, for adventure and escape, but also for comfort and relaxation. We invite participants to quietly allow themselves to drift away into their imaginations as they listen to these transformative stories.

Texting Syria/Liam Maloney

Thirty minutes south of the Syrian border, 16 refugee families live in tents erected within a disused slaughterhouse. At night, the men get on their mobile phones and text home, hoping for news from friends and relatives still trapped along the front lines of the civil war.

Photojournalist Liam Maloney photographed them in the dark, their faces lit only by the glow of the screens. With the squalor of their surroundings mercifully cloaked in darkness, they could be us, outside a club, checking our messages - but their communiques are matters of life and death. Using your own mobile phone, find out what they were saying to each other in this interactive installation.
