Errol's Pick

Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, one of the hardest working soul bands in the business, play a highly anticipated show at Massey Hall Friday and Errol played some samples off their latest CD, Give The People What They Want. If you're looking for some classic soul flavoured with Motown beats, Stax horns and James Brown-style funk, snatch this one up. This is a sound that the dynamite 9-member group has been perfecting for more than 15 years and you'll get a chance to sample it Friday. Jones' voice, which can be gritty and tender, tops it all off very nicely but last June she got the scare of her life when she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. She had surgery which left her without a gall bladder and part of her pancreas, and last New Year's eve, she endured her last chemotherapy session. Jones may have lost her hair but not her feistiness. In an interview, she said, "They sent me to get a wig. I put that thing on and I looked like Dionne Warwick. I said, I'm not wearing this wig! I always wear my hair natural. I'm not going to do the wig thing." Wig or no wig, Jones is back in full effect and you'll see what I mean if you go to the show.
