CBC Radio One the most-listened-to station in Vancouver, while Metro Morning captures an unprecedented share in Toronto

CBC Radio is a hit with Canadian audiences, and the November ratings from the Bureau of Broadcast Measurement (BBM) prove it - CBC Radio One achieved spectacular results across all key markets with the highest share for the network since the Portable People Meters (PPM) audience measurement was introduced in September 2009.
  CBC Radio One captured a record 9.9 percent share overall in the five markets measured by PPM - Toronto, Montreal,  Vancouver, Calgary and Edmonton. In the country’s second-largest radio market,  Vancouver, CBC Radio One was the No. 1 station for the first time since PPM measurement began. In Toronto, where CBC Radio One was No. 2 in November, the flagship a.m. show Metro Morning dominated its time period with its highest share ever.
  These numbers come on the heels of the fall survey results last week, which also saw CBC Radio maintain its strong audience levels in the 18 diary markets across Canada.
  CBC Radio 2, the nation’s music service, also performed well with its largest share since debuting format changes in September 2008.
  “We are incredibly pleased with November’s ratings and our results around the country,” said Chris Boyce,  Executive Director, Radio & Audio CBC English Services. “These spectacular results reflect that the programming is striking a cord with Canadians, across a variety of topics and in different regions.”
  Network programs have increased both audience and share. The largest gains were by news programming - World Report and The World At Six. Both The Current and The House have experienced sharp increases in audience and share while new programming like This Is That have increased share and audience in their time periods.
Locally, CBC Radio is breaking its own records:


  • CBC Radio is the No. 1 station in Vancouver from Monday to Sunday, 2 a.m. to 2 a.m. B.C.  Almanac gained a point from last month’s PPM numbers with a 7.9 percent share and On the Coast capturing a 9.1 percent share - its highest PPM result ever.
  • CBC Radio in Toronto showed strong momentum, with its highest weekly share ever, at 10.5 percent. Toronto’s Metro Morning with Matt Galloway captured an 18 percent share - the highest ever for the show in one of the country’s most competitive markets.
  • CBC Radio in Montreal built on the gains of October with a share of 9.2 percent, with numbers for Radio Noon and Breakaway climbing.
  • In Calgary, CBC Radio’s Calgary Eyeopener maintained its No. 1 ranking in the mornings, and in Edmonton CBC Radio captured its highest ever PPM share, with 7.2 percent,  led by strong performances from Alberta@Noon and Radioactive.

November was also a strong month for online content with the launch of Canada Reads: True Stories, and the CBC Books portal peaked in page views during the big reveal of the five celebrity panelists and the titles they’ve chosen, hosted by Jian Ghomeshi.
