What's In Season?
Buying produce in season can help you save money and eat fresh.  Toss in optimal flavour, and the benefits of seasonal food start adding up.

Ever wonder why some vegetables and fruit taste bland?  Chances are they aren't in season.  Produce that's in season tastes better.  

Seasonal food that's locally produced may also be lighter on your wallet and better on the environment since it doesn't have to travel far to get to your table.  

Eating seasonally also challenges you and your family to try new foods and create meals based on what's available.

In Canada, only greenhouse products such as peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuce and herbs are still being produced and harvested in the middle of winter, according to Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada.  Other Canadian produce also include storable items such as apples, potatoes, cabbage, carrots, onions and rutabagas.  Availability varies from province to province.

So winter can be a challenging month for fresh, local produce.  What to do? Debbie Field, executive director of FoodShare, a non-profit advocacy group, had this advice:

"We promote healthy, affordable, culturally-appropriate food.  Go local and seasonal when possible - organic, when it's the same price. "

But she added, the focus is on health and affordability.

In Canada, produce varies from province to province, but here's a general list of what's available in parts of the country:

  • Apples
  • Beets
  • Cabbage
  • Carrots
  • Garlic
  • Parsnips
  • Potatoes
  • Sweet potatoes
  • Mushrooms
  • Onions
  • Squash
  • Turnip
