How to move caribou 130 kilometres across a great lake
Jan 26, 2018
Doezens of caribou from Michipicoten Island are enjoy some pretty luxurious travel accommodations this month.
The caribou are being flown by helicopter across Lake Superior to their new home on the Slate Islands.
The trip is more for survival as opposed to pleasure.
The herd was about 700 strong on Michipicoten Island at one point but it has been under attack by wolves, which crossed over to the island on an ice bridge a few years ago.
Art Rodgers is a research scientist with the MNRF and was also the man who organized the relocation.
He spoke with host Jason Turnbull.
