The Coast Guard says new marine mammal monitoring operations could help the Southern Resident Killer Whales
The Canadian Coast Guard is hoping technology can help protect the southern resident killer whales and other cetaceans in B.C. waters. The federal government has created a Marine Mammal Desk based in the Coast Guard's Sidney offices. Five employees are working full time to co-ordinate information on whale sightings, along with monitoring vessel traffic. Scott Rear is the Regional Program Specialist for Coast Guard's Marine Communications and Traffic Services. He spoke with Kathryn Marlow.
