Our series "Hong Kong Handover – 25 Years Later" looks at the events that happened since July 1st, 1997. That's when Britain returned Hong Kong to the People’s Republic of China. The Chinese government had promised a “high degree of autonomy” to Hong Kong - a city of over 6 million people at the time.
However, in the last few years we have seen massive changes to rights and freedoms in Hong Kong and that is prompting people there to leave for places like Canada.
Throughout the series we hear from diverse Vancouver voices like media reporters who fled Hong Kong, an immigration consultant and a Chinese history professor.
