The Current starts this week in Victoria, B.C., with special coverage of the crisis in Canada’s health-care system.
First up today, it is no longer a criminal offence to possess small amounts of certain illicit drugs in B.C., as part of a three-year pilot project aimed at tackling the opioid crisis. Matt Galloway talks to Inspector Conor King, an illicit drug specialist with the Victoria Police Department; and B.C.’s Chief Coroner Lisa Lapointe.
Then, the documentary Part of the Pack features several British Columbians who have connections to wolves — either in the wild, or by keeping part-dog, part-wolf breeds as pets. We talk to filmmaker Isabelle Groc; and Gary Allan, a wolf educator who has owned six wolfdogs over the past 20 years.
And we discuss the challenges of accessing health care in remote, rural communities with Dr. Alex Nataros, a physician in Port Hardy, B.C.; Jude Kornelson, co-director of UBC’s Centre For Rural Health Research; and Tanille Johnston, the Vancouver Island manager of primary care for the First Nations Health Authority.
