Musician Eugene Hütz flies the flag of Ukraine's cultural resistance
19:36
As the one-year mark of the war in Ukraine approaches, Eugene Hütz has emerged as a flagbearer of the cultural resistance. The longtime frontman of New York City-based "gypsy punk" band Gogol Bordello was born and raised in Ukraine. Since the start of the war, he and his band have been rousing crowds with songs from their new album, Solidaritine, which is dedicated to the Ukrainian cause. He's even performed for soldiers inside his home country. Hütz tells Piya Chattopadhyay that punk rock behind the Iron Curtain helped bring down the Soviet Union in the late 1980s, so it’s no surprise that the punk community was among the first to rally in support of Ukraine after the invasion began.
