With children's hospitals across the country operating at full capacity, emergency room wait times reaching more than 20 hours in some cities, and a severe shortage of family doctors in rural communities, Canada's public health-care system – still recovering from the pandemic's impact – looks to be on the brink of disaster. The situation has some provinces mulling private delivery of some health services to take strain off the public system. Dr. Danielle Martin, a family physician and chair of the University of Toronto's Family and Community Medicine Department, says that would be a grave mistake. In 2017, Martin outlined her fixes for the health-care system in her book Better Now: Six Big Ideas to Improve Health Care for All Canadians. She joins Piya Chattophadhyay to talk about what's behind today's crisis, and why she thinks the best way out of it is through better leadership and collaboration, not short-term private alternatives.
