In the throes of the pandemic, and following a breakup, Montreal neo-classical pianist Jean-Michel Blais found himself alone in a big apartment, wondering what his musical future would look like. But the two-time Polaris Music Prize nominee turned those depths into a defiantly uplifting new album called Aubades. He joins Piya Chattopadhyay to talk about how this lush, layered and hopeful counterpoint to his earlier solo piano work came to be, and his experience composing for an ensemble for the first time.
