Advocates fear a reversal of rights as New Brunswick reviews its policy on protecting LGBTQ students

Earlier this month, the government of New Brunswick announced it would be conducting a review of Policy 713, which sets out guidelines for the protection of LGBTQ youth in schools. Premier Blaine Higgs has suggested he thinks parents should be informed about the names and pronouns students choose to use at school. Gail Costello, the co-chair of Pride in Education, a group of educators who work to create affirming spaces for queer youth in schools, and which helped to draft the policy, says she fears the review could result in fewer protections for LGBTQ students.
