Ontario narrowly avoided a general strike on Monday as private and public sector unions banded together, successfully pressuring Premier Doug Ford to repeal a bill which would have imposed a contract on education workers, banned them from striking and used the notwithstanding clause to override their charter rights. Bill 28 proved to be a red line for unions, prompting a strong showing of solidarity despite deep internal divisions. Stephanie Ross, director of McMaster University's School of Labour Studies, tells us how significant this week's showdown was and what it might mean for Canada's labour movement moving forward.
