With laws & language, Canadian politicians have presented Muslims as a threat, says community lead

On June 12, funerals will be held for four people who were killed last Sunday in London, Ont., while they were out walking together as a family. Police say they were targeted because they are Muslim. That is a shocking thing for many people to hear. But Dr. Wael Haddara, the medical director of the Surgical Intensive Care Unit at University Hospital, London Health Sciences Center and a promient member of London’s Muslim community, says we need to acknowledge that anti-Muslim sentiment is deeply entrenched in Canada, in part because for decades, Canadian politicians have been willing to appeal to those sentiments for political gain.
