Interview with the Berlin-based illustrator Domink Heilig and his friend Oliver Sonnentag.

In 2022, Scotty Creek became one of the world’s first fully Indigenous-led research stations in collaboration with Wilfrid Laurier University. Shortly after the Łı́ı́dlı̨ı̨ Kų́ę́ First Nation took over the station, a wildfire gutted five of nine buildings at the remote site 50 kilometers south of Fort Simpson. Research equipment, lab space, sleeping accommodations and solar arrays were destroyed. Now, the LKFN is going full steam ahead with the rebuild and they'll be joined by an unlikely helper. Dominik Heilig is an illustrator based in Berlin. He first heard about the destruction and the rebuild from his longtime friend Oliver Sonnentag who is the researcher and associate professor at the University of Montreal. Hilary Bird spoke with both of them last week.
