American computer scientist Katie Bouman, 29, created an algorithm — a set of rules a computer uses to solve a problem — that allowed scientists to take the very first photo of a black hole. She had to figure out how to get eight telescopes scattered across the planet to work together like one giant Earth-sized telescope. This allowed scientists to take a photo of something so small and far away that Bouman said it would be like taking a photo of an orange on the moon.
