Every week, CBC Kids News takes a deep dive into a topic that’s been making headlines. Click the video above or below for this week’s KN Explains.

In December 2022, James Cameron’s movie sequel Avatar: The Way of Water was released in theatres world-wide. It’s been dominating the box office ever since.

The second Avatar movie surpassed $2 billion US at the box office in January against its $250 million budget, making it the highest-earning sequel movie of all time.

If you look ahead to upcoming film releases in 2023, you will see a lot of sequels.

From Marvel Cinematic Universe follow-ups like Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania to Despicable Me 4, lots of popular series will continue this year.

What’s the deal, here? Why are so many sequels getting made and is there a place in Hollywood for new, original ideas?

CBC Kids News Contributor Arjun Ram investigates with the help from film critics Barry Hertz and Eli Glasner.
