Pistachio the puppy born with bright green fur

Green dogs may sound like something out of a children’s novel or fairy tale, but an Italian farmer’s new puppy is proof they are very real.

Cristian Mallocci was surprised when a new litter of puppies was born and one of them had green fur.

The puppy, named Pistachio, was born on Oct. 9 on a farm in Pattada, Italy.

Its mother, Spelacchia, is one of eight farm dogs owned by Mallocci.

Each of Pistachio’s four brothers and sisters were born with white fur, and it’s extremely rare for a dog to be born with green-coloured fur.

How did that happen?

It’s believed that contact in the womb with a green pigment called biliverdin dyed his fur while in his mother's tummy.

Born bright green, Pistachio’s colour will fade day by day as he gets older, eventually turning white like his siblings.

When they are old enough, his brothers and sisters will be given away to new homes, but Pistachio will stay on the farm and be raised to look after sheep, like his mother does.

Mallocci said that he hopes Pistachio brings a smile to people's faces during this tough time during the COVID-19 pandemic.
