Who? Morgann Book, a.k.a. @ancasterdq. What? Student and TikTok star. Where? From Ancaster, Ont.

A sweet treat leads to social success

On a cold January day back in 2020, 17-year-old Morgann Book was working at her parents’ Dairy Queen in Ancaster, Ontario.

The fast-food and ice cream store wasn’t busy, the cleaning was done and Morgann had some time on her hands.

That’s when she decided to make a few TikToks about her job at Dairy Queen.

“Overnight we got 40,000 followers and then, over the next couple of days, we grew to 150,000,” Morgann said in an interview with CBC Kids News.

That excitement didn't stop. As Morgann posted more, the number of followers grew and grew.

Slightly more than a year later, her account has close to 71 million likes and more than two million followers.

Morgann often posts ice cream cake-making videos with voice-overs that offer advice on everything from how to apply for your first job to her daily life.

She also posts behind-the-scenes videos about life as a Dairy Queen employee.

Can she whip up some sweet answers to our questions? Tune into the vibe check below!

A dairy … diary?

Posting on TikTok has become almost like a daily diary for Morgann.

She said she’s met countless fans and received messages of support from around the world, including the U.K., Australia and the Philippines, to name a few.

Connecting with the world “makes me so happy,” Morgann said.

TikTok has made that possible, she said, at a time when the COVID-19 pandemic has made it almost impossible to travel and meet new people.

“I think it's really important to look at the positives of social media right now.”

Her local TikTok fans will often place orders for pickup, asking Morgann to design something special for the top of their custom-made ice cream cakes.

With all the sweet positives that come with her account, Morgann doesn’t shy away from talking about hate or trolls online.

“Don't let [hate] bring you down. Honestly, I'm not saying that I like getting hate comments, but it makes me appreciate all the amazing messages and comments that I get. That's what really matters, because if you didn't have bad days [and] you didn't have rude people commenting, you just wouldn't appreciate all the good things.” - Morgann Book

What’s an item on your bucket list? “I want to go to Australia and swim in the Great Barrier Reef. Even though I don't like fish or sharks!” You love to read. What’s the last book you couldn’t put down? “The whole Throne of Glass series, I binged that in, like, a week and there's six books.” Pineapple on pizza, yay or nay? “No! Why? It's fruit. Fruit does not belong on pizza. I'm sorry. No.” Best DQ Blizzard flavour? Anything Oreo or Smarties. “It just hits different.”
