Game on! Elden Ring, Stray and God of War win big at the 2022 Game Awards Dec. 9, 2022
The annual Game Awards took place in Los Angeles on Dec. 8. The show celebrates the video game industry and gives trophies to the best series of the year. Canadian journalist and award show creator Geoff Keighley, pictured here, acted as the host.
The show’s first big surprise came when Oscar-winning actor Al Pacino, who isn’t known as a gamer, presented an award for best performance. After that, the winner, God of War Ragnarök’s voice actor Christoper Judge, made an acceptance speech that lasted nearly 10 minutes.
The Game Awards’ biggest prize went to Elden Ring for game of the year. The fantasy action role-playing game is part of the Dark Souls series. Unfortunately, an acceptance speech by Elden Ring’s director Hidetaka Miyazaki was interrupted by a heckler, seen here at the microphone, who was reportedly arrested afterwards.
Other big wins include Stray for best indie game. God of War Ragnarök took home the most trophies of the night, with six wins for best action/adventure game, best narrative, innovation in accessibility, best audio design, best score and music and best performance.
The Game Awards also featured the world premieres of several video game releases and trailers. This year, the show debuted a new hide-and-seek game mode coming to Among Us and a clip from the upcoming animated Super Mario Bros. Movie.
