Over the last week, a trend of exchanging imaginary money called dabloons and buying imaginary goods has blown up on TikTok. The hashtag #Dabloons has accumulated hundreds of millions of views in just days and continues to grow rapidly.
In most cases, you collect dabloons by watching a video that offers them for free. You keep track of how many you collect and lose, based on an honour system. For example, a dabloon TikTok could be as simple as someone saying, “Five dabloons for your troubles,” and then you’d add five imaginary dabloons to your imaginary wallet.
The dabloon name comes from doubloons, an old, retired Spanish currency made up of gold coins.
Many of the dabloon videos feature cats that make the dabloon exchange, whether it be selling you imaginary soup or giving you a handful of dabloons. According to KnowYourMeme.com, the cat mascot came from a meme of a cat with its paw outstretched with the caption: “4 dabloons. One dabloon per cat toe.”
Users can exchange their dabloons to buy fictional items, like medieval clothing or quaint, make-believe cottages. More recently, the economy has become more complicated, with videos of “robbers” who may steal your dabloons, leading some users to sell dabloon insurance in case of theft.
