The length of summer vacation can vary across Canada based on which province you live in. At most schools, though, the last Saturday in June marks the official start of vacation, and Labour Day in September marks its end.
But do kids all over the world get their time off school at the same time? Keep reading to find out what summer vacation is (or isn’t) like in a couple of other countries!
In Argentina, summer vacation starts in mid-December and goes until the end of February or the beginning of March. Wait a minute! Wouldn’t that make it a winter vacation?
Nope! In the Southern Hemisphere, these are actually the hottest months of the year! So even though it’s during what we think of as winter, it’s still their summer break!
Adults also usually get a vacation in January or February, so the entire family packs up and heads down to one of the country’s many beautiful beaches. During summer vacation, the beaches are absolutely packed!
Depending on what region they live in, kids in India can start their vacations between March and May and start school back up between June and July. One unique area is the Kashmir Valley in the north, where summer break is only ten days!
In India, like in Canada, it’s up to kids and their parents to decide how to spend their break.
Some choose to take lessons, like swimming, that they might not have time to during the school year. Visiting family they might not get to see often is another popular option. Of course, watching as much TV as possible is also a favourite for many kids!
In England, summer vacation starts in the middle of July and ends at the beginning of September. That means most kids only get about six weeks off!
Summer vacation in England is pretty similar to Canada. Kids go on family vacations, often getting out of the city and into the country!
Festivals celebrating music or theatre are also fun destinations. And although they’re a bit of a recent import, summer camps have been gaining in popularity over the last few decades.
Unlike here in Canada, the school year in Japan doesn't start in September, but in April.
So when they go on their summer vacation from mid-July to the end of August, it doesn't mark the end of the school year, but a nice long break during school.
Because summer vacation takes place between semesters, kids are actually given homework during their time off. The homework could include things like simple spelling tests or fun assignments like logging the growth of a plant.
While that may sound like a bummer, kids are still encouraged to spend time with family and enjoy normal summer activities.
