Bee or Wasp?

Bees are fuzzy and round, whereas wasps are thin and smooth.

Wasps and bees can be mistaken for one another especially when you hear that buzz right beside your head and you panic! Not to worry, chances are that a bee or wasp is not out to sting you. And, if you can manage to stay calm, you may be able to tell if it’s a bee or wasp that is checking you out.

What is the difference?

Take a look at the body: bees are hairy, while wasps usually have smooth and shiny skin. Bees are long and round, while wasps are long and cylindrical.

How to avoid stings

  • Don’t wear perfumes. Bees are looking for flowers, the last thing you want to do is smell like one!
  • Avoid wearing bright clothing, especially floral prints.
  • Be careful what you eat outdoors — sugary foods and drinks will attract bees and wasps.
  • Stay still. If you’re afraid of bees and wasps, this may sound crazy, but the worst thing you can do is swat at it. Once it realizes you’re not a flower, the bee or wasp will fly away.
