Female superheroes have sometimes had to deal with problems that their male counterparts don’t.

There still aren't as many female superheroes as there are male ones. But there are writers and artists trying to change that so that the world of superheroes is more balanced.

Male superheroes have outfits that are made really tough like armour, but many female superheroes still have outfits that look more like bathing suits.

You probably know the amazing Wonder Woman, with her invisible plane and lasso of truth. Although Wonder Woman is one of the first, and certainly the most famous female superhero, she’s definitely not the only one.

Let's have a look at some of the more recent female superheroes making their mark!

Ms. Marvel

Ms. MarvelMs. Marvel, also known as Kamala Khan, was just your everyday teen in Jersey City. One day she was transformed by mysterious Terrigen Mists. After being exposed, she discovered that she was able to polymorph her body’s shape — stretching and forming it into anything she can imagine! She can enlarge her hands into giant fists for a punch or make her foot massive for a kick. Ms. Marvel can also adjust her height and stature, shrink to the size of an action figure or grow as tall as a building. Those abilities, along with rapid healing, make her a really impressive hero. Ms. Marvel has been a member of the Avengers and serves as leader of the teen supergroup the Champions.

Wave

WaveWave, whose identity is Pearl Pangan, grew up on the beaches of Cebu in the Philippines. After being exposed to unknown energies while in the water, Pearl gained powers to control and manipulate water. Along with her impressive power, Wave is skilled with the dual longswords that she takes into every battle. She currently fights alongside Shang-Shi the Master of Kung-Fu and their team, the Agents Of Atlas.

Ironheart

IronheartWhat if Tony Stark was a girl? What if Tony Stark was a girl and way cooler? Well, those two questions sum up Riri Williams. Riri grew up on the south shore of Chicago and was certified a child super genius after many ongoing evaluations by psychologists. So what did she do? After being accepted to the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T.) at 15, she did what every kid would want to do… she built her own Iron Man suit. Battling crime in her custom suit of armour caught the attention of Tony Stark, who endorsed her to become the superhero known as Iron Heart. Riri currently fights alongside the Champions with Ms. Marvel and Miles Morales.

The Birds Of Prey

On top of individual heroes, there are also entire teams made up of female superheroes! The most famous of these are The Birds of Prey. The team was originally a collaboration between the superheroes Black Canary and Barbra Gordon (Batgirl/Oracle). This team-up would go on to include other superheroes like the Huntress (a Gotham City vigilante), Catwoman (the sometimes hero, sometimes villain) and Lady Blackhawk (a pilot from World War II who was whisked through time and ended up in the present day). Comics can be a little weird sometimes.
